Safety Spans an Ocean
For Newton Aycliffe, UK, and Wahpeton, ND
Nearly 4,000 miles separate our two President’s Safety Award winners. (We checked.) But they’re much closer when it comes to their commitment to injury-free days.
Keeping facilities safe across the globe requires commitment at every level. Rules are just the beginning—it takes the focus of everyone on the floor to identify hazards and protect one another. When it comes to safety, no one takes a day off.
Newton Aycliffe, UK
At the Newton Aycliffe manufacturing plant in the United Kingdom, their 122 employees have taken this charge to heart, going nearly eight years without a recordable injury. With 103,000 square feet of floor space, that’s a lot of ground to cover, making this streak all the more impressive. Keep up the excellent work, Newton Aycliffe!
“Eight years without a recordable injury is a remarkable achievement, and it’s driven by the unwavering culture of safety on the plant floor,” said Tom Tinnirello, vice president, Global Environmental Health and Safety, Quanex. “The leaders of the plant have cultivated a culture of trust, caring, and an uncompromising commitment to working safely every day. Workers know that their concerns and ideas to improve safety are heard and acted upon.”
Wahpeton, ND
About six time zones away, the 86 employees at the Wahpeton, North Dakota, Quanex Custom Solutions plant are also putting safety first, living out the Quanex CREED to Exemplify Safe and Healthy Living and by Doing the Right Thing. As they engage in their detail-oriented work, they’ve gone 2.3 years without a recordable injury and an outstanding 6.6 years without a lost time injury. Way to go, Wahpeton team!
“Wahpeton earned this award due to their total commitment to safety, which is evident in their daily work practices,” Tom said. “The team actively identifies hazards and opportunities for improvement and takes decisive action to address them. This year, OSHA conducted a random inspection of the entire facility—the inspector praised the team for their detailed efforts, recognizing their exceptional commitment to workplace safety.”
With plants, warehouses, and labs all over the world—from Australia to Italy to Mexico to all over the United States and beyond—safety is a shared language. A work-related injury anywhere affects all of us, everywhere. This year’s safety record across the globe was outstanding. The selection committee appreciates it when it’s tough to choose the winners because so many teams are performing at a high level. This year was no exception!
Thank you all for your continued commitment to safety and to living the Quanex CREED. Keep up the good—and safe—work!
