Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight
Lucia Guajardo
Meet Lucia Guajardo, benefits and compensation administrator at Quanex Houston. Lucia is proud of her Hispanic heritage and jumped at the chance to share some insights with us for Hispanic Heritage Month.
Q: What is one thing you want/wish people knew about your heritage?
A: While Hispanic heritage is usually lumped together as one distinct group and thought of for amazing food and traditions, it is important to realize that Hispanic culture is made up of many diverse communities, and each of those communities has its own flare that is represented in the regional foods and traditions.
Q: How do you embrace Hispanic Heritage Month?
A: I embrace my heritage month by celebrating Mexican Independence Day on September 16th and supporting local Hispanic-owned businesses. It’s a meaningful way to connect with my roots and uplift our community.
Q: What are some of your favorite traditions?
A: Music is a central part of Hispanic culture, so one of my favorite traditions is going to concerts. I also enjoy museums and taking tours to learn more about my culture’s history. Beyond that, Hispanic heritage is deeply tied to faith, so many traditions are tied to my faith.
Q: What is your favorite part of your culture?
A: What I love most about the Mexican culture is the food, the music, and the sense of community. As an only child, that strong sense of togetherness means a lot to me.
Q: What has your experience been like working at Quanex?
A: Quanex really makes sure I feel supported and represented. I have an amazing team, and from day one, I’ve felt welcomed and valued, which has made my experience for the past two years a positive one.
Q: Have you worked in manufacturing environments/companies before this?
A: Quanex is the first manufacturing company I’ve worked for, and it’s been a big change from my previous HR positions in a non-profit tutoring service organization and a country club. Since I’m still early in my career, this shift has been eye-opening, teaching me new skills and helping me grow in my role.
Q: Tell us about your role here at Quanex. What would you say is your favorite part of it?
A: As the benefits and compensation administrator, I ensure that employees have access to the benefits they need and that everything runs smoothly. I manage all inquiries that come through our inbox, assist employees with benefit enrollment, and ensure everyone feels supported. I also oversee the structure and employee compensation across the company. This includes salary reviews, ensuring pay equity, and staying aligned with market trends. My favorite part of my role is helping employees and seeing the positive impact we have as a team within Quanex.
