Marketing It’s more than making pretty things

by Guest Blogger

When kicking off a project with a marketing vendor, one of the first questions you are likely to hear is: What are you trying to accomplish?
The digital world has completely changed the way marketing is done, opening up so many more possibilities. You might think you want a pretty sales slick, but what if your goal is to get more leads or expand into a new region?
In days of yore, the only options for drumming up new business was mass advertising (penny savers, billboards) or by putting feet on the ground. Today, your marketing team and vendors are an invaluable resource for expanding into new markets and generating leads
So when you hear, “What are you trying to accomplish?” from a marketer, he or she is just trying to figure out the best way to help you reach not just your marketing goal – but also your business goal.
The answer to that question will help determine the right mix of nearly endless strategies and tactics that exist for businesses today. To name just a few:

  • Pay-per-click advertising
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Digital display ads
  • Paid social media programs
  • Media relations and thought leadership
  • How-to videos
  • Blogs
  • Blogger outreach
Don’t get me wrong, there’s still an important place for more traditional marketing, such as brochures, fliers, ads and cutaways, but they typically help close the deal – not attract new customers.
So the next time your marketing partner asks what you want to accomplish, remember they can be an important ally in helping you generate revenue.
